The Waves Between
James John Midwinter’s photographs of the Cornish coastal landscape are an unexpected approach to the subject of the sea, with a monochromatic palette. Images are at once a depiction of both solitude and community; the isolation at sea and the emotion of people we return to on land. A distance remains between the human figures in his photographs even when they are side by side, mirroring the separation implicit between the waves of the ocean.
Ocean, surfer, rocks, fishing boat: The Waves Between capture all with the same unflinching regard of exposure, yielding images that are at once a depiction of both isolation and community; the deep solitude of the sea and the people we return to on land. The figures in James John Midwinter’s photographs have an intangible intimacy between them; yet the true relationship is that which exists between the sea and the humans who venture into it. His Cornish coastal landscapes are wholly unexpected in their minimalist and monochromatic approach.
James John Midwinter is a British artist living and working in Cornwall. Upon moving to Cornwall in 2015 his passion for art and photography was reignited by the energy of the coast, and he set about capturing the feelings and emotions of surfing and the landscape around him.

Artist Review: Guillaume Sardin
Guillaume Sardin occupies an artistic space of wonder that is at once disciplined and childlike. A space where the warmth of a human hand overrides digital perfection, and the characteristic whimsy of his “narrative drawings” belie the deep skill that goes into the studied relaxedness of every line.
